What are Cheek Fillers?

Cheek filler is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure that gives cheeks a fuller, more defined look with the use of dermal filler injections. With a quick injection, this cheek augmentation treatment can address volume loss and lines and wrinkles in the cheeks.

These innovative minimally invasive treatments can define and enhance your facial bone structure, increase volume in the cheeks, fill in wrinkles, and smooth lines, and give you a more youthful appearance in no time.

There are a few different types of cheek fillers: hyaluronic acid fillers, calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), and poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) injectables.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most common and consist of the naturally occurring substance to increase volume and provide hydration to the skin. Juvederm and Restylane are the most well-known FDA-approved dermal fillers.

CaHA fillers use the naturally occurring substance (CaHA can be found in the bones) to provide immediate results, smoothing deep lines and wrinkles and adding fullness to your cheekbones. Radiesse is a CaHA filler.

PLLA dermal fillers, on the other hand, work to promote collagen production to provide volume gradually over time. Sculptra is a very popular PLLA cheek filler.

Benefits of Cheek Fillers

There are a variety of benefits you can look forward to with injectable dermal fillers for the cheeks, including the following:

  • Nonsurgical:  With cheek fillers, you don’t have to worry about incisions or invasive surgical procedures. With just a few injections, you can receive significant results immediately.
  • Long-lasting: No matter what cheek filler is included in your treatment plan, you can expect results to be long-lasting. Results can last anywhere from six months to two years.
  • Low risk of complications: Compared to cosmetic surgery, there are very few side effects and complications. The most common side effects are mild swelling, bruising, and some tenderness.
  • Quick recovery: Because the treatment only consists of a few simple injections, recovery is very minimal. You will need to avoid strenuous activities and touching or massaging the treatment area, but that’s about it.
  • Less expensive: It cannot be overstated how much less expensive cheek fillers and other injectable fillers are when compared to plastic surgery and more invasive treatments. You will save money while ensuring you look and feel your best.
  • Provides a more youthful appearance: Because cheek fillers can fill in and plump lines and wrinkles and address age-related volume loss in the cheeks, they can make you look younger in only a matter of minutes.

Am I a Candidate for Cheek Fillers?

Most patients looking to address volume loss and lines and wrinkles in the cheeks are good candidates for cheek fillers. We also require you be in good overall health, be a nonsmoker, have realistic expectations of treatment, and not have a history of chronic health conditions. Cheek fillers are not recommended for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, has a bleeding disorder, or is allergic to any of the components of the cheek filler formula.

Consultation and Preparation

Before any injections take place, you will need a consultation with one of our providers at EsthetixMD. During this appointment, we’ll review your medical history, discuss your concerns, answer any questions you have, and talk through your treatment goals. We’ll also look at your facial anatomy. Once we have all that information, we’ll build a customized treatment plan to ensure all your aesthetic goals are met.

To prepare for your injections, you’ll want to avoid smoking, limit your alcohol intake, stop taking blood thinners, stay out of the sun, and avoid harsh skincare products in the days before your appointment. On the day of the appointment, you’ll want to be well-hydrated.

Your Cheek Filler Treatment

To start your cheek filler procedure, your provider will begin by cleansing your skin. A topical anesthetic may also be applied, if necessary. Some cheek fillers come with a numbing agent already mixed in.

From there, they will use a thin needle to inject small amounts of the appropriate filler underneath the skin. You may feel a slight pinch, but most patients don’t feel any pain at all.

How many injections you receive will depend on the results you’re looking for. Most treatment sessions take about 15-30 minutes.

Results, Recovery, and Aftercare

After your cheek filler injections, you will likely experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness, but those side effects usually subside within a day or two. You will want to avoid touching or massaging the treatment area, strenuous exercise, and putting pressure on the injection sites. You will also want to stay away from smoking, excess sun exposure, and makeup (at least for a few hours). Sleeping on your back for 48 hours after injections is recommended to avoid pressing on your cheeks.

As for results, it can depend on the type of cheek filler. For hyaluronic acid and CaHA filler, you will see noticeable results immediately, with full results taking a few days to show up. PLLA injections take several weeks to show results as the collagen builds up in the skin.
