Everything to Know About Botox

28 Mar

Botox was one of the first cosmetic injectables, and it remains one of the most popular injectable treatments. This minimally invasive treatment with little downtime offers many remarkable cosmetic and health benefits. If you are considering Botox in Bend, OR, this is what you should know before your appointment.

What Is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved botulinum toxin injectable or neurotoxin. Botulinum toxin type A temporarily relaxes overactive muscles and prevents muscle contractions to smooth dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements. When provided by our expert injectors, Botox results will restore a more youthful and refreshed appearance with a natural look. These results last an average of 3-4 months and can be easily maintained with additional appointments.

Using Botox for Cosmetic Purposes

Botox injections can smooth fine lines and wrinkles in various areas of the face. Some of the most common treatment areas include frown lines between the brows, crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, chin wrinkles, and bunny lines. Additionally, Botox can be used for a non-surgical brow lift to address heavy or asymmetrical brows. Downturned mouth corners and vertical lip lines can also be treated with Botox or a combination of Botox and dermal fillers.

What Other Conditions Can Botox Treat?

The relaxing properties of botulinum toxin also make Botox an effective treatment option for several health conditions. Among the most common are chronic migraines and hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating under the arms or on the hands and feet. Botox injections can also treat eyelid twitching, neck spasms, and urinary incontinence by preventing excessive muscle contractions. When injected in the jawline, Botox can simultaneously treat jaw pain (TMJ) while slimming the jawline for a more defined contour.

Preparing for Botox

It’s crucial to follow your provider’s instructions to properly prepare for Botox treatment. We recommend that patients avoid taking blood thinners, NSAIDs, and other medications or supplements to reduce their bruising risk. You should also refrain from consuming alcohol at least 24 hours before treatment. If you have an active skin infection such as acne or cold sores, you will have to wait to receive treatment. Pregnant women and breastfeeding moms should avoid Botox.

What to Expect During Botox Treatment

Botox doesn’t require anesthesia, but a topical numbing agent can be applied to the skin to minimize discomfort. Your provider will administer the injections into the areas of concern with a fine needle. Patients typically do not feel any pain except for a tiny pinch. Botox is performed on an outpatient basis, which allows you to leave the office and immediately resume your daily activities. The treated area or areas should be left alone for at least 12 hours, and you should avoid any strenuous activities for at least 24 hours.

Botox Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare, but mild symptoms such as bruising, swelling, and tenderness in the injection site are common for a few days after Botox injections. You may also experience headache, neck pain, drooping eyelids, upset stomach, or flu-like symptoms. However, these side effects are much less common and should fade after 24-48 hours if they do occur. If you have any concerns after your Botox treatment, please call our office.
